Coup de chaleur en République Dominicaine

Pour la 2e étape de la Vuelta Independencia Nacional en République Dominicaine, 156 km étaient au menu. L’étape montagneuse, reliant Santo Domingo à Las Terennas, a eu lieu sous une chaleur accablante de 36 degrés Celsius. Pas de chance pour Adam Andersen, déjà grandement incommodé par la chaleur la veille.
La première moitié de la course a été très offensive, avec de nombreuses attaques. Une échappée a finalement réussi à se former, avec Étienne Samson dans le groupe. Malheureusement, l’équipe Garneau-Québécor assurait la poursuite et la jonction a été inévitable.
Au kilomètre 73 se trouvait la première ascension de la journée, une côte de 3e catégorie qui a réduit le peloton de moitié. C’est à ce moment qu’Étienne a payé ses efforts de début d’étape, ne réussissant pas à tenir le rythme. Même chose pour Adam qui n’a pas été épargné par les crampes pour une deuxième journée. Pour ce qui est de Louis-Charles, sa course s’est terminée alors que son vélo lui a fait faux-bond, brisé. Mais le pire était encore à venir avec l’éprouvante côte finale, un col de 2e catégorie.
La course est donc terminée pour Louis-Charles Lacroix, qui ne pourra pas prendre le départ de la 3e étape, n’ayant pu terminer le parcours. Étienne et Adam ont terminé malgré tout et espéreront une température plus fraîche pour la suite !

Heat stroke in Dominican Republic
The second day of the Vuelta featured a 156km stage with a few hills. The stage between Santo Domingo and Las Terennas held under an exhausting temperature of 36 Celsius degrees. No luck for Adam who was still feeling the effects of the heat from the first two stages.
The first half of the race was really aggressive, with numbers of attacks. Finally a group is able to escape and Etienne is in it. However, team Garneau-Québécor was chasing and inevitably all came back together.
At kilometre 73 was the first hill of the day, a 3rd category climb that halved the peloton. At this time Etienne paid for the efforts he made earlier in the stage and he can’t hold the first group. It is the same for Adam who suffered cramps for the second consecutive day. As for Louis-Charles, a broken bike ends his race. But, the worst was still to come with the exhausting final ascension, a 2nd category climb.
It is therefore an end of the Vuelta for Louis-Charles who would not be allowed to start the 3rd stage, not having finished the race. Etienne and Adam completed the stage and hopefully the weather will get more cooperative for the rest of the Vuelta!
