Tour of Sharjah

1ère étape

La première étape du Tour de Sharjah se déroulait au centre-ville sur un circuit de 16,5 km au tour, pour un total de 100km. Le parcours était assez technique et laissait très peu de repos. Il s’agissait d’une route sinueuse en bord de mer avec un « U-turn » à chaque extrémité.  Les virages en épingle ont animé la course en emportant des coureurs au sol à chaque tour ou presque ! Ces mêmes virages créaient un énorme « effet élastique » qui demandait de la relance. Le reste du parcours était animé par les vents qui changeaient d’orientation constamment, envoyant les coureurs dans la bordure, d’un côté ou de l’autre.

Bref, la difficulté du parcours et la chaleur a tranquillement écrémé le peloton de 142 coureurs.  Plusieurs coureurs de Norco/Premier tech on tenté de s’échapper mais rien n’a pu empêcher Alexandr Pliuschin, coéquipier de Francisco Mancebo de prendre 4 minutes d’avance sur le peloton et de remporter l’étape.  Au final, Étienne Samson a amené Anton Varabei au sprint pour que celui-ci termine 12e du peloton, bon pour une 20e place, nous permettant d’être dans les bourses. Jean-Michel Lachance venait tout juste de se remettre d’une attaque solitaire et n’a pas pu participer au sprint alors que les autres coureurs Norco étaient tout simplement cuits après une course extrêmement éreintante.

Demain : une étape en ligne de 136km ascensions au menu, avec notamment une côte de 2km à 10% vers la fin.

Sharjah International Cycling Tour- Stage 1

Sharjah, United Arab Emirates… What an unusual place to ride a bike! This is exacty what 6 athletes from Team Norco/Premier Tech did a couple days ago in order to compete in the second edition of the Sharjah International Cycling Tour, an UCI 2.2 stage of the UCI Asia tour.

First stage took place downtown on a pretty technical and relentless 16,5 km loop. The course was all about twists and turns and crosswind since it was right by the sea. Turns literally animated the race with crashes happening every lap at the 2 U-turns that riders faced each lap but they also forced riders behind to dig really deep after those turns. Of course, the wind was also a major factor as it was changing every few minutes and forcing lots of riders to ride single-file in the gutter….

The course difficulty and the heat slowly did their job and took a toll on the 142 cyclists peloton. Many Norco/Premier Tech riders attempted to break away from the field but no one could prevent Alexandr Piluschin, one of Francisco Mancebo’s teammates, to win the stage by a 4 minutes margin over the peloton. In the bunch sprint, Etienne Samson lead out Anton Varabei who ended up 12th of the peloton (20th from the stage) and right inside the prize money. Jean-Michel Lachance couldn’t fight for the finale since he tried to escape a couple of km earlier. Other Norco/Premier Tech riders suffered from the heat finished the stage ‘’cooked’’ after an extremely hard first stage.

Tomorrow, riders will face a hilly 136 km stage including a 2km climb averaging 10% in the final kilometers…
