Tour of Sharjah

Alors que les coureurs ont franchi les montagnes la veille, pour trouver refuge pour la nuit dans la ville de Khor Fakkan, il fallait cette fois retraverser en direction de Sharjah. Cette troisième étape, la plus longue de toute la course (165km), a finalement été assez tranquille.

Les vents ayant redoublé d’ardeur, il aurait été logique de s’attendre à un véritable feu d’artifice. Il en a toutefois été autrement avec le vent majoritairement de plein front. Les coureurs sont restés regroupés jusqu’à environ 20 kilomètres de l’arrivée, où un changement de direction et une accélération de la dominante équipe Sky Dive Dubai a littéralement fait exploser le peloton en plusieurs éventails dans la bordure.

Du côté de l’équipe Norco/Premier Tech, Anton Varabei et Jean-Michel Lachance ont manqué de peu la cassure du premier groupe. Avec un très fort travail de leur part, ils ont réussi à revenir sur le groupe de tête. Malheureusement, 3 coureurs s’étaient déjà détachés. Après tout ce travail, les deux coéquipiers ont tout donné lors du sprint pour aller chercher les 17e et 21e places de l’étape, victimes d’un mauvais placement en fin de course. Notons que Jean-Michel s’était précédemment glissé dans une échappée en début de course ayant eu jusqu’à deux minutes d’avance, mais qui a été victime des forts vents.

Étienne Samson, Simon Ouellet et Louis-Charles Lacroix ont également offert une bonne performance dans les bordures en créant le deuxième groupe sur la route.

Demain sera la dernière étape, avec au menu 135 kilomètres dans les faux plats et les vents (comme toujours) !

Ce sera la dernière chance pour l’équipe d’aller chercher le podium tant espéré, et d’améliorer le positionnement au classement général de Jean-Michel, qui est présentement en 13e position.

Sharjah International cycling Tour- Stage 3

This third stage took the riders back to Sharjah. Having spent the night in Khor Fakkan, they would have to venture into the desert once again for a grueling 165km stage. Feared by lots of riders, this stage ended up being pretty quiet.

As the wind blew harder than ever, many expected early fireworks and a spectacular stage. However, the constant headwind changed the game and forced the peloton to stay together until approximately 20km to go. A sudden wind change combined with a strong acceleration from Team Sky Dive Dubai blew the peloton apart, taking advantage of the echelon riding and forcing even strong riders in the gutter.

Jean-Michel Lachance and Anton Varabei both narrowly missed the split with the front group but then chased very hard to make contact with the leaders. Unfortunately, the rest of the team got stuck behind and Lachance and Varabei gave everything they had left in the tank in the chaotic final sprint to take 21st and 17th place respectively.

Lachance also took part in the early breakaway that increased its lead to over 2 minutes although the strong headwind quickly blew any hope of making it to the end. Etienne Samson, Simon Ouellet and Louis-Charles Lacroix had a good day on the saddle and worked very hard in the second group in the closing kilometers.

Tomorrow’s fourth stage will take riders around Dubai and Sharjah. Again, winds will play a major role in the way this will all unfold. It’ll be the team’s last chance to get sneak on the podium and to improve Jean Michel Lachance’s 13th place in the general classification.
